Danial Stibbard                                       Steve McDonald

Welcome to 2021 Pennants results for all Divisions.

The Captains will have a running commentary over the next 7 weeks featuring tales of woe and feats of triumph, so read to the bottom to see the results for each round

Division 1 Rd1 playing Wellington at Wentworth

Danial Stibbard lead the side out and right from the first shot the feeling amongst the team was Dan was on today and so it transpired winning easily 7/6 Danial played as well as I’ve seen anyone play Pennants with power hitting and perfect iron play putting for birdie on every hole, it was a stellar debut and a delighted Captain saw every shot.

Ian Nightingale was making his debut for Bathurst playing Pennant regular Elton OKeefe and 5 wayward shots from Elton was all it took for Ian to win 5/4 steady golf  and playing smart where on display and Ian never look troubled so 2 good wins straight up

Justin Sutton started well against Mitch Cusack making birdie on the 1st hole, the next few holes where halved then Mitch found his putting groove reeling off a string of birdies Justin responded with birdies of his own but these where to halve some holes this included the 14th par 5 then on the 15th Justin hit a poor putt then missed his par putt, Mitch made up and down from the fringe and the match was over 4/3 high quality golf with Mitch being under par for the day.

Matt Phillips had one of those days were none of this putts would go in the hole with Curt Cusack running out a comfortable winner 5/4

Steve McDonald played nicely swapped holes with Lewis McCarthy all day. The 17th started the drama off with Lewis flailing his tee shot into the trees on the left what followed were some terse words because he was 1up. Steve knocked his tee shot to the fringe then putted to 2 feet, Lewis couldn’t get out of the trees throwing his club into the bag and marching to the 18th tee, so it was all square with 1 to play.

The 18th, good tee shots were hit and Steve hit his best 2nd shot of the day to 5 foot below the hole, Lewis hit his approach up the bank at the back of the green spinning it to the back fringe 20 foot away. Lewis hit his putt beautifully barely missing so Steve had a putt to win but missed, so to extra holes the Boys went to the first which is a short par 4 Steve hit a great tee shot pin high just off the green then chipped to 1 foot Lewis also hit his shot to a foot also. Steve then putted first but missed (bugger) and the rubber was over Wellington defeating Bathurst 3/2 though disappointed with the result all the boys battled hard and played in good spirit and are looking forward to next week.

Captain Nick Wintertons Team (good win boys)

Division 2 had the bye

Division 3 had the bye

Division 4 Rd1 playing Cowra at Duntry

Clint (Tiger) Bryant our number 1 had the biggest win of his Pennant career pummelling his opponent 7/6

Mal (Magnificent) Robins won on debut grinding down the opposition then holing a putt to win on the 19th

Captain Nick Winterton showed all his experience leading from the front for a good win

Ian (Football) Harris starred with the sticks with a great match play debut leaving his opponent bewildered 3/2 win

Andrew (Rocky Jrn) Rossiter battled hard all day but lost 4/3. The Captain has high hopes for this team who he believes can go all the way to the final (don’t be to generous with them gimmes)

Practice at Dubbo on Saturday

Division 1 Rd2 Bathurst vs Parkes at Dubbo

Travelling to Dubbo is always a challenge so 4/5ths of the team went up on the Saturday and practiced on the course that afternoon, this I feel was a master stroke with light hearted banter mixed alongside serious inter team match play.

Darryn Bruce first match out against Jack Elliott and with two wayward drives missing the fairway on the first hole both players looked in trouble from the outset, but Jacks greenside chip had to be conceded with Darryns putt being 50foot away to half the hole. Golfs a game of momentum though and with that putt going in to halve the hole, the nerves then settled and Bathurst was able to win the next 2 holes and keep control of the match winning 1up.

Matt Phillips was taking on evergreen Robert Hey this promised to be a dinge dong battle and holes traded hands for most of the day. It was good to see Matt bounce back from last weeks loss with some good quality golf and towards the end of the back 9 Matt seized control of the match with Robert chasing birdies to catch up but  Matt was able to close out his match on the 17th for a 3/1 win.

Danial Stibbard was up against Aaron Wilkie and both players struggled in the wind missing fairway after fairway, so it came down to who was the best scrambler. Brad Gilbert once was quoted as saying I won ugly I think Danial would agree he did the same 4/2 win. (you don’t have to draw pictures)

Justin Sutton was taking on old rival Joe Van Opren, Joey is one of the true character’s of the Central West Pennants and he and Justin over the years have had many a grudge match. Justin practiced nicely on Saturday and I felt at the time his form warranted him going into his match as favourite the result summed up in one word (To Steady) 3/1

Reece Hodson played Riall Harrison and power hitting was the name of the game Reece was in control of this match for most of the day but on the 17th Reeces drive found a terrible lie just off the fairway and he was only able to advance it about 50 metres towards the green leaving another 50 to go so a bogey ensued both player had putts to win on 18 but missed sending the match to extra holes. Reece unfortunately found the houses on the right a bit to close hitting his tee shot into someone’s front yard (Bugger)  losing on the 19th so off to Wellington next week to play Dubbo (go Bathurst)

Held the finish nicely

Division 2 Rd2 Bathurst vs Parkes at Home

Justin Adams absolutely smashed his opponent 6/5 and now is being considered the rock of the division 2 Pennants team and worthy of a battle field promotion

Tony Foster missed out on Pennants last year and was chaffing at the bit to show Captain Darren Small he still had what it takes to be a force in match play and force he was winning 5/4 and looking to take that number 1 spot in the team

Dave Hitchick played steady all day to grind out a 1up win

Greg Adams had a gutsy win he hasn’t played Pennants in years so the cobwebs had to blown off the swing and they tell me he remand calm for most of the day. Good win though 1up.

Captain Darren Small lamented missed opportunities on the greens but hung around all day to make it close eventually going down 2/1 so off to Wellington next week to take on Dubbo. (go Bathurst)

Division 3 Rd2 Bathurst vs Parkes at home

The team got off to a strong start claiming a 3/2  victory after having the Round 1 bye, a big thank you to the Club and Matt & Tim who put on a cracking day, all the other clubs commented on how excellent the course looked and played!!

Individual results

Matt Loxley kicked off the day with a solid victory over his Parkes opponent closing out the match strongly 3/2

Will Johnston got off to a great start in his first ever Pennants match, but his opponents experience proved too strong claiming a 5/4 victory

Next off was Blake Arthur who from his first tee shot off the 7th showing his Parkes opponent that he was in for a tough day, with Blake claiming an easy 6/5 win and earning an early beer in the clubhouse

David Clews turned in a fantastic performance after a delayed stint on the side-lines, the match was his first round since late last year and he claimed a 2/1 win

Last off for the day was Captain Matt Bennett, a match that saw the lead change 3 times, with Parkes eventually claiming a 2/1 win

Mal Robins deep in thought

Division 4 Rd 2 Bathurst vs Parkes at home

Again we are pretty happy with our win. Clint had a grinding 3/2 victory over his opponent with a 5 metre putt mid game sparking his round and leaving his rival gobsmacked. Mal (the gun ) Robbins again took his opponent to a 19th play off hole before again emerging triumphant. I myself  lead most of the way staging off 2 comebacks to eventually win 3/2. Nathan Burke starred for division 4 winning his return match 7/6 or the biggest margin you can get & unfortunately Ian our number 5 crumbled leading 3 up late in the match to go down 1/0 on the last hole which was pure bad luck . Great day enjoyed by all teams.

missing Matt Phillips

Division 1 Rd3 Bathurst vs Dubbo at Wellington

Leading off the team this week Matt Phillips was feeling a little under the weather and this coupled with Scott Parkinson’s stellar play translated to a heavy loss 5/4 for Bathurst

Steve McDonald played at 4 for Bathurst against Chris Schubert and with Steves putter failing to fire this allowed Chris to coast to a comfortable 5/4 win for Dubbo

The Comeback

Justin Sutton needed to dig deep for Bathurst for N Gooch from Dubbo looked a quality player reeling off long drives on most holes but at times seemed distracted which allowed Justin to edge ahead with some clutch birdies on key holes, not fazed by the Instagram tinging Justin rolled on for a convincing 3/2 win

Ian Nightingale had the match which decided the rubber against veteran Anthony Kek. The game seesawed most of the day making us all nervous, but a good drive down the 17th put paid to any ambitions Anthony had of a comeback a steady par was all it took to win 2/1

Reece Hodson promised his Captain his game was in good shape today and poor Dan Harper had to watch as Reece reeled off 6 birdies in 13 holes sealing a much appreciated win 5/4 Bathurst defeating Dubbo 3/2

Division 2 Rd3 Bathurst vs Dubbo at Wellington

Why is the grass so long Justin’s drive has just disappeared did you see it land (no can you send out the search party)

These utterances could be heard around the course all day it was tough at Wellington

Justin Adams lead off and looked full of enthusiasm after a reasonable drive down the first but at the halfway barrier looked to be in a spot of bother getting rolled by G Stephens 4/2

Tony Foster was full of grit and clawed away all day making a nice par on 17 to send his match down the 18th needing a par on the last to send it to extra hole he was unable to convert his 5 foot putt and lost gallantly on the last

Dave Hitchick impressed with his bash and gouge style of play and was to strong for N Sparkes 5/4

Greg Adams impressed with calm consistent shot making and was just to strong for D Medcalf winning 3/2

Captain Small lamented missed opportunities and the long rough to record a bitter loss 3/2 can they bounce back next week?

Div 3 Results Rd3

Dubbo vs Bathurst at Wellington

Matt Loxley kicked off the day strongly sending his first drive straight down the middle and his Dubbo opponent never looked likely from that point, Matt continued his strong run of form over the past few weeks cruising out to a victory

Next out was Jason Cooke, after a shaky tee shot he steadied and went 5 up through the first five holes, his Dubbo opponent got a couple back late but to no avail with Jason getting the win

Blake Arthur battled a season Dubbo pennants veteran and couldn’t re-capture the form of round 1 with Dubbo getting the win

David Clews had another solid performance in a match that went hole for hole, with his Dubbo opponent getting a couple up late and holding on for a shaky win

The last match of the day  Matt Bennett saw another hole for hole battle, with an early 2 up lead to Matt his Dubbo opponent was able to get those back just as quickly eventually seeing the match finish 3/2 in Dubbo’s favour

In hot conditions the team battled extremely hard and an unfortunate loss 3/2, now off to Cowra for our final outing in a must win match against Mudgee

Rethinking his approach to kikuyu grass at Wellington

Division 4 Rd3 Bathurst vs Dubbo at Wellington

Bryan Finnerty’s light burned bright cruising to enlightened 3/2 and wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about the long grass

Andrew Rossiter battled to the 17th hole but Mark Brown breathed a sign of relief when his putt went in clinching a 3/1 win

Magnificent Mal Robins took a hit to his pennants ego because Greg Barlow handed out a lesson on how to play out of the rough Mal tried hard all day eventually going down 4/3

It was the worst result thus far for Division 4 with the top 4 all losing, the long kikuyu playing havoc with chipping and iron play Clint Bryant will be looking for tips from Matt Barrett come Wednesday Ted Skinner took full advantage for an easy 6/4 win

Its practice on Wednesday time for group hug
